Sights of the Cultural Landscape Moritzburg

The unique combination of impressive architecture with beautiful nature shapes Moritzburg as one of the most attractive destinations in Saxony.

The baroque hunting castle is the main character in midst of this unique forest and pond landscape. Thanks to the far-sightedness of duke Georg the Bearded and the aristocrat family Wetting the marshy forest around today's castle was drained around 1500 on the basis of a pond system. As a result the castle pond amongst others was created, in the middle of which Moritzburg Castle raises. It is the centre of a cultural landscape designed for electoral pleasures including the Little Pheasant Castle and the lighthouse at the big pond.

There are many ways to experience this attractive and historico-cultural interesting ensemble : Making use of the numerous hiking and bicycle trails, on a carriage ride or on the romantic steam train „Lößnitzdackel“ or learning on a tour through the surrounding forest and ancient centre of the village. In addition, you may be guided to the places where the artists from „“Die Brücke“ created their expressionist, full of colours and the joys of life works in Moritzburg.

What is more, activist Käthe Kollwitz' last place of residence in Moritzburg and a small collection of works offer an interesting insight into more than 50 years of artistic activity.

Furthermore Moritzburg maintains a long tradition in horse breeding, pond fishing and hunting; the extensive wildlife reserve has kept its historic diversity of species and is particularly popular for families.

Experience Moritzburg's unique combination of culture and nature!
